Being Happy

We try to be happy around here. Sometimes it can be hard though. Life can get ya down.
New jobs are hard! There is always a period of time in a new job when I am adjusting and I feel like an idiot pretty much constantly because everything is new. This newest job was no exception. Toward the beginning I was having a particularly hard time. But this is what I came home to on my mirror in the bathroom:

How can you not be happy when you see that? :) So, like I said, we try to be happy around here.

Sometimes it's easier than others.

Good Samaritan

My dad came over for dinner tonight. It was kind of strange to be a real adult and have my dad over and cook dinner for him because my mom is out of town. But I think I handled being a real adult semi-decently. At least I thought it was a fun night.

I think it's time for my modern day Good Samaritan story. So I was planning on getting some groceries on my way home from work yesterday. Not just a few, but one of those major grocery shopping trips. You know, after 8 months of living in Utah, I felt like I really got the hang of grocery shopping there. I knew what good prices were for different items and I knew which stores to get everything at. But now that we are in Iowa it's a whole new ball game. Good prices here aren't the same as good prices in Utah. And besides Walmart, all the grocery stores are different. Anywho, my mom has always done some of her shopping at a place called Aldi (although in our family it as always been called Aldis...not exactly sure why, but none of us can stop...except dad) and convinced me I needed to do the same. Although she failed to mention some very important details about Aldi which will become apparent in a moment.

Aldi is a very unique grocery store. For many reasons. For instance, you have to pay a quarter to get a cart (you get the quarter back if you put the cart back, it really does keep the parking lot clear of carts), you either have to bring your own grocery sacks or buy some from them, and last, and most importantly, they don't take credit. It's cash or debit, my friend.

My trip to Aldi did not get off to a good start. I couldn't figure out how the darn carts were locked together, so I put my quarter, my ONLY quarter, in the slot that unlocked the second cart in!!! There was no way to get that cart out so I was about to call it quits and just get all my groceries at Walmart (looking back, I should have done just that). But then came my hero around the corner, some stranger looking to get himself a cart. So I asked him if he wouldn't mind buying the cart that was blocking mine, since I put my quarter in the wrong slot. He kindly obliged. Thank you sir. I then proceeded to leisurely peruse the aisles of Aldi, finding many wonderful deals and feeling quite successful. Until I got to the check out. I already had all of my steals placed on the conveyor belt when I heard the lady two in front of me say, "you mean you don't take credit?" dun, dun, dun. Crap. I had a whopping three dollars cash on me and I never use my debit because I always forget the pin!! I tried to calm myself down and think clearly. I knew my pin was in my brain somewhere, I just had to find it in the next three and a half minutes. So I texted Brennan, and I racked my brain. Nothing. So the cashier rang me up. And I tried my debit card. Declined. Twice. I was about to try it a third time, but she told me it would be my last try and I would be locked from using my card for 24 hours. So she let me think about it for a few minutes while she helped a few customers behind me. I was already humiliated, I just wanted to leave. ASAP. But the cashier was ultra Mrs. Helpful. She got me a phone book, and insisted that I look up the nearest branch of the bank I bank with. I didn't even know how I could get cash from a bank at that point! It's not like I could use an ATM without a pin! So as I'm hemming and hawing my way out of going to a bank and trying to decide if I should just leave my groceries sitting there in the cart or if I should put them away, my knight in shining armor, my good samaritan, my hero #2 comes to the cash register to purchase his groceries. Upon hearing about my plight, he asks if I have my checkbook on me so I can write him a check and he will pay for my groceries. I do not. (I wasn't a Boy Scout, being prepared is obviously not my motto.) After thinking about it for a moment, he says "tell you what, I'll pay for your groceries and give you my address, and you can mail me a check." All I manage to get out is a pathetic "really??". I mean not even a courteous "oh, that's not necessary" or "you don't have to do that" or "no, I couldn't possibly let you do that". Just, "really??". Apparently, I look trustworthy. That's what he said anyway. So Al paid for my groceries, wrote his address on the back of my receipt, and was gone. Wow. He is a better man that me. (well, I'm not a man at all, but you know what I mean.) I am sorry to say that I never would have done that. I mean there was a good chance he wouldn't get that 30 dollars back. But I bet he felt pretty good after he did that. I'm sure he could see the relief in my eyes, just to have a way out of the whole embarrassing situation. He was a complete stranger. I don't suppose I will ever see him again. There was no reason for him to do that. But he did. That's pretty awesome if you ask me. Maybe (hopefully), I'll think twice if I'm ever on his side of a similar situation. Because I was sure grateful. And it made me happy. I was smiling and laughing the rest of the day just because I got to witness someone doing a good thing. A real good thing.

So Al, if you're out there. Thank you. You are an inspiration.

And yes, I got his check in the mail. Came home and wrote him out a nice Thank You note right away. Wouldn't want to accidentally forget. Haha, wouldn't that be awful?

Alien Tomato

We have tomato plants. They produce...interesting...tomatoes. Such as this one. I think it's from another planet.

In other news, I had the most interesting run-in with a modern day Good Samaritan today. I will post the story tomorrow. Stay tuned. :)

Happy Monday!

No, Brennan does not run scientific experiments in our house. Actually, this is what he looks like when he is about to slice an onion. We have really powerful purple onions. A week or two ago I was slicing one for dinner and I couldn't finish because my eyes were burning so bad. Brennan half-jokingly suggested I find the old goggles I used for chemistry. I decided to just let him finish the onion for me that time. But the next time I had to slice an onion I found those darn goggles, and they worked!! So now this is a regular sight around our house when it's onion cutting time.

We are usually on top of the latest trends, so I'm pretty sure this will catch on soon.

Anywho, Happy Monday!!

Here Come the Brides!!

After a busy August, we have had a pretty slow September. Although, apparently not too slow since I haven't found the time to blog at all. We seem to be getting into a nice routine. Brennan is finally able to work consistently since the technical problems have been fixed. Yay!! School is going well for him and I am getting the swing of things at my new job. I actually really enjoy it and I am so glad I was able to find this job and feel like I am at least kind of using my degree, instead of feeling like I wasted the last four years.

September brought a couple more weddings for us. These sorts of things come in threes, right? Liz, Kassy, and Gretchen, so we should be done for awhile. Not that I am complaining, weddings are beautiful events and fun to witness and be a part of. Kassy and Gretchen are two more friends from high school who got married this month. I was Kassy's personal attendant and couldn't be happier for her and David, they are great together.
There we are on the big day. The wedding was wonderful and everything seemed to go off without a hitch.

Yesterday, Gretchen and Andy got married. I wasn't in the wedding party, I had no duties or responsibilities, I just got to go and watch and enjoy and be happy for them. It was kind of a nice change. Gretchen and I go way back. :) In middle school she used to walk to my house in the morning and then we would walk to school or early morning basketball practice together. And then after school, pretty much every single day, Gretchen and my neighbor Grant would come over and we would play games and eat cookies until dinner time. Seriously. Instant cookies. Every day. And we never failed to down a whole batch. We were disgusting. Anyway, the point is, Gretchen has been a good friend for a long time. She is so much fun. I am so happy to see her with Andy, who is also a ton of fun.
The happy couple.
Someone put a bowling ball and chain on both Gretchen and Andy at the reception. They had to keep it on until they could find the right key. I thought it was pretty entertaining. Not sure how funny they thought it was. :)

I think that one of the greatest things about going to weddings is the opportunity to see people you don't normally see or that you haven't seen in awhile. Last night, we got to see Nora Senyk, an old friend of mine from middle school. She moved away after 8th grade, and I haven't seen her in probably 6 years. It was great to catch up and visit for awhile.
All of these weddings sure do bring back a lot of memories for us. It is fun to think about our wedding day and all the people we got to share that with. What a wonderful experience!

Last, but not least, I have to share the cutest picture of my newest niece. My sister, Mara, had her first baby about a week and a half ago. I am so happy for her and Ben!! And I am so excited to go and meet this little one in a couple of weeks.
Jade.

Our New House

August was an absolutely crazy month for us. Between our two long trips, my new job, Brennan starting school, and buying a house, it seemed we hardly had time to breathe. We are loving our new place though! This last week we finally got almost everything unpacked, even got pictures hung. Since our house is finally looking somewhat presentable I decided it was time to share some pictures.
view from the entryway
upstairs living room
kitchen/dining room
office
upstairs bathroom
bedroom
downstairs living area-looking a little sparse :)
downstairs spare bedroom-also a little sparse

It is quite a change to go from a tiny one bedroom/one bathroom apartment to a three bedroom/two bathroom home. It seems huge! I couldn't even decide where to put any of our pictures because there were too many options! You can see from the pictures that all of the downstairs is pretty empty. Hopefully we will grow into it eventually. :) But for now we are loving it even in its emptiness.

Roadtrip

Get out your map.
(I was a good navigator. Darn good.)

It's roadtrip time.
So we drove back from Utah on a Sunday. It was about a 20 hour trip and we got in around 7 in the morning. On Monday we did some laundry and Brennan worked. On Tuesday we both worked and we packed yet again. We left Tuesday night for a 24 hour car ride to North Carolina. Talk about back to back trips. I wondered if we'd survive...but we did, and had a mighty fine time along the way. We counted how many states we hit between the two trips, I can't remember now, hang on I'll ask Brennan...11 for me, but Brennan got 12. In just one week we got to be in 11 different states, kinda crazy but it was pretty cool.

Originally I wanted to get pictures of all the state signs, but unfortunately I slept through half of them and far too many were in unsafe locations so we couldn't stop and get out. Here are a few we did capture though.
3 out of 12? Wow, kind of pitiful.

We got of a random exit, I'm not even sure what state we were in, but it just happened to be Harding St. It may have been because it was in the middle of the night, but we thought it was pretty exciting.
The really great thing about this road trip was that we weren't in too big of a hurry. We had to pick Grant up in Raleigh and we were ahead of schedule so we got to keep stopping at places that might be cool. Usually we ended up driving around until we decided we weren't going to find whatever we happened to be looking for, but even that was fun. One stop that was kind of a flop was at super old tobacco plantation. It probably would have been neat if we had enough time to do the tour, but we were absolutely NO good at the self-guided tour.
But we still got a picture. :)

By far the best stop was in a town called Mt. Airy. My dad texted me after we left and told me this town was on our route and it was the filming location of The Andy Griffith Show. It's the real life Mayberry!!! I was pretty excited about stopping. It was so much fun to see all the places I could recognize from the show.
Andy's house. You couldn't look around inside without making reservations to stay the night there.
The courthouse.
So there's a funny story about this picture. Brennan was asked to take a picture of a couple at sitting at the sheriff's desk, so he did. Well then the woman saw him doing this pose and thought it was just the greatest and made a comment about it. Then a few minutes later we see her run over and do the same thing and make her husband take a picture. I thought that was pretty amusing.
We even got to meet Andy and Opie. :)
This was really the farthest I've ever been out east excluding New York. It was beautiful. We tried to capture it from the car as well as we could, but it doesn't do it justice. Especially when an incredibly dirty windshield gets in the way. :)
We decided to take a different route back home and went through Tennessee. I am so glad we decided to do that. We got to go through the Great Smoky Mountains which were incredible. I would love to go back someday and really enjoy them. It was just good to see as much of this country as we possibly could.

Brennan has been a huge fan of a band called Ingram Hill for years now. He found out that they were doing a free outdoor concert in Louisville, Kentucky on the day we were headed home. Pretty lucky for us. It wasn't exactly the environment that we imagined, or one we would hope for but the music was really good and we were glad we got the opportunity to see them live.
Brennan even got to meet the lead singer.
There we are in Louisville.

It really was a fun trip. Exhausting. But so great to be able to spend so much time together and do as many fun things as possible. It was a perfect way to end our summer.
